Located halfway between Adelaide and Darwin, Alice Springs serves as the gateway to the Red Centre and is high on most backpacker’s itineraries when visiting Australia. It’s situated on the doorstep of iconic destinations like Uluru and Kings Canyon, and is backed by the ruggedly beautiful MacDonnell Ranges. This is the Australia that many travellers envision - red-rock gorges, vast swathes of desert and a rich Aboriginal culture. There are great museums and indigenous art galleries in town, together with a surprising choice of restaurants and nightlife for such a small town.
Farm jobs in Alice Springs include jillaroo and jackaroo positions on outback cattle stations, as well as general labouring work on rural properties. Backpackers can also find jobs in the harvest industry, with the table grape picking season in nearby Ti Tree from November to December and vine pruning during May and June. Other important crops in and around Alice Springs include dates, mangoes, melons, citrus, pomegranates and onions, offering year-round work for travellers.
