Campervan and car relocation deals in Australia
Renting a car or RV can cost several hundred dollars a week once insurance and fuel costs have been factored in. That puts it out of reach for people who are holidaying on a budget or exploring the country on a working holiday visa. If you’re not careful car rental costs can eat up most of your budget leaving you little left over to enjoy your holiday.
But there is a way you can explore this beautiful country in a rental car or campervan without having to fork out hundreds of dollars in rental costs. Many rental companies offer campervan and car relocation deals when they need to move a vehicle from one location to another.
How does vehicle relocation work?
Such deals are often available from rental companies which offer one-way rentals. For example, a rental company will rent a car in Sydney for a one-way trip to Brisbane. Once the vehicle has arrived in Brisbane it needs to be returned to Sydney. To do this the rental company offers a one-way relocation deal.
The rental company will list the journey on our website for a reduced rate. The daily rate varies depending on the type of vehicle, but deals start from as little as $5 per day. Each deal typically includes a generous daily mileage allowance and a specified date for delivery. Fuel for the journey has to be provided by the renter. (insurance excess costs still apply).
Such relocation deals represent a great opportunity for backpackers and those on working holiday visas to explore the country safely and at relatively low cost. Most deals also allow time to experience several attractions along the route, so there’s no need to rush.
Popular RV relocation routes
Relocation deals are available between some of the most popular destinations in Australia including; Melbourne, The Gold Coast and Uluru. But some routes are more popular than others. Check out some of the most popular relocation routes below:

Types of relocation vehicle available
A wide range of vehicles come available for relocation. Here is a guide to the types of vehicles you can expect.
RVs - Recreational Vehicles
Recreational Vehicles (RVs) are the largest type of vehicle you can drive on a standard license. They are purpose-built, usually on a van chassis, and provide up to six berths. RVs provide comfortable accommodation for large groups and families. Most come equipped with cooking facilities and a washroom so you won’t need to book separate accommodation.
Campervans
Campervans are typically smaller than RVs and usually based on converted panel vans. They provide sleeping accommodation for up to four people with cooking facilities also included. Some campervans come with a washroom, but most do not. We will let you know what is included when you sign-up for a rental. If a washroom is not included you will need to find somewhere to freshen up along the route.
If you would rather hire a campervan, make sure you read our guide to the best campervan hire websites.
Cars
A wide range of cars is available from small hatchbacks to large 4x4s. These are capable of carrying 2-6 passengers. Cars are easy to drive and offer great value but you are not able to sleep in them. So you will need to factor in the cost of accommodation along the way. That doesn’t have to be a hotel, most travellers keep their budget low by staying on campsites.
It is important to note that all vehicles (including 4x4s) must remain on sealed roads. Rental companies usually issue penalties for vehicle damage caused by driving off-road.
We list the latest car and RV relocation deals on our website each day. Popular destinations are always available but we sometimes list more remote destinations which are great for more adventurous travellers.
