Labourer Jobs in Brisbane
Brisbane, like every Australian city and town, was built on the backs of labourers. The profession remains as important as ever, offering honest work to anyone who is fit and able. And being a job that is available everywhere and open to almost everyone, labouring is a popular way for backpackers to make a little dough.
But is labouring in Brisbane the right job for you? And what should you expect as a 417 or 462 working holiday visa holder if you become a labourer? Let’s take a closer look.
What does a labourer actually do?
As discussed on our Labourer Jobs page, there are two main types of labourer: skilled and unskilled.
Skilled labourers (otherwise known as tradespeople) are professionals like electricians, plumbers, and carpenters, who have trained for years to be able to do a specific job.
Unskilled labourers (or general labourers) take care of the unskilled work - things like moving or unloading material, assisting the skilled labourers, managing traffic, clearing debris and any other simple tasks.
What labourer jobs are available in Brisbane?
Labourers are employed in a wide variety of industries. Common labourer jobs in Brisbane include:
- Construction labourer
- Warehouse labourer
- Landscaping labourer
- Council worker
- Road worker
Where can I find labourer jobs in Brisbane?
It’s not hard to find labourer jobs in a big city like Brisbane, but certain areas will employ more labourers than others:
- The CBD: With skyscrapers, heritage buildings and high traffic, there are always projects underway in the Brisbane city centre for which labourers are needed. The Queen’s Wharf Precinct is currently one of the biggest
- Cross River Rail: Worming its way from the north of the CBD to the south, Cross River Rail is one of Brisbane’s biggest ever infrastructure projects, and will keep hundreds of general labourers employed for years to come.
How much does a labourer earn in Brisbane?
Australia’s minimum wage is one of the best in the world, so you can be confident of earning at least $20 per hour. Depending on the work you may earn more though - head to our Labourer Jobs page for more info.
Should I get a labourer job in Brisbane?
Should you choose labouring in Brisbane over another job? Before you say yes, consider:
- The physicality of the work: A base level of fitness is a must for a labourer - you might be lifting and shifting heavy things and working in the heat, so be ready for physical and often tiring work.
- The pay: You may only get minimum wage, but at least you’ll get minimum wage. A lot of other backpacker jobs are piece work, where you’re paid for the amount of work you do or goods you sell, rather than your time.
- City work isn’t specified work: Labouring in Brisbane won’t help you extend your 417 and 462 working holiday visa, because it doesn’t count as rural work.
Now that you know what you’re in for, it’s up to you to decide whether labouring in Brisbane is the right option for you. Either way, if you’re on this page you’re probably in need of a job, so be sure to browse Backpacker Job Board to see what positions are open right now!
