Housekeeping is a fantastic way to work your way around Australia
There are many good reasons why Australia has always been such a popular destination for working holidaymakers and backpackers looking to experience the Aussie lifestyle for a while. From its many beautiful cities and glorious and unmatched beaches to an outback that is teeming with unique and fascinating wildlife, you need to visit Australia at least once in your life.
However, there’s also no denying that Australia can have a high cost of living, which can put a bit of a dampener on your holiday if you’re chewing through your money too fast. But this doesn’t mean you have to cut your holiday short. Instead, why not think about working your way across Australia?

Is it easy to find Housekeeping work?
While there are plenty of possible jobs that you can utilise to support yourself as you backpack around Australia on your working holiday, housekeeping jobs are some of the easiest to find and provide you with plenty of free time to explore the area that you’re currently visiting. There are always businesses looking for casual cleaners, which means that you shouldn’t have too much trouble securing a position. You can usually do them in the short term and they often don’t require a lot of experience, which makes them a great option for anyone who is travelling around the country.
Picking up a casual housekeeping position while you’re travelling will leave you free to travel, explore and experience all that Australia has to offer while not having to worry about money.
What is housekeeping?
Housekeeping is exactly what it sounds like. Cleaning areas of the hostel, hotel, campground or Airbnb in exchange for an hourly or other agreed-upon return.
How much can I make in a housekeeping job?
You will receive at the very least minimum wage, which will depend upon how old you are and where you're located, but you might receive a higher wage as well. Generally, the wage will be dependent upon the employer and the employee as well if you have any experience in housekeeping or not.
Expect to be paid anywhere from $20-$30 an hour.
Can I get a housekeeping job with accommodation?
Sometimes, you may also be offered a casual housekeeping position in return for free accommodation, which is typical at many hostels. This is often something like 10-15 hours a week which gives you plenty of time to head off and explore. Not having to pay for accommodation costs can save you plenty of money in the long term and take a big strain off your finances.
Are there differences when it comes to the region or town you're in?
Housekeeping jobs are going to vary a bit depending on where you’re located at the time. Larger cities such as Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide or Sydney will have plenty of options for you to choose from in terms of types of housekeeping. Smaller regional or coastal towns, however, might only have one small hotel or hostel that you can enquire at. Smaller areas may have a waiting list for housekeeping jobs, especially if you’re enquiring at a hostel.
Different types of housekeeping work available
There are a few different forms of housekeeping jobs that you can choose from when you're travelling in Australia. These include:
1. Hotels
Hotel housekeeping will involve the cleaning and housekeeping of hotel rooms in between guests as well as the tidying up and cleaning of many general areas such as restaurants, reception, hallways and lobbies.
2. Hostels
Hostel housekeeping will be a bit more informal than a hotel. Generally, you will help change beds when guests leave to ensure that the bunk or bed is ready for the next occupant. You will also likely help with other general cleaning tasks such as vacuuming hallways, cleaning general-use kitchens, and keeping other areas of the hostel, such as media rooms, clean and tidy.
3. Airbnb
Airbnb housekeeping will depend upon the Airbnb in question. You may be required to clean and service just a room or if an apartment or house was rented out, you may be asked to give the entire property a clean and spruce up.
4. Campgrounds
Campground housekeeping is very similar to hostel or backpacker housekeeping in that you will be required to clean all common areas such as cooking facilities as well as ensuring that bathroom and toilet facilities are sanitary and clean as well.
Taking on housekeeping jobs while you’re travelling through Australia is a great way to fund your trip so that you can travel for longer. Casual housekeeping allows you to support your travels with a bit of work while still having enough time to enjoy everything that Australia has to offer and more. With the ability to pick up a casual housekeeping position almost anywhere in Australia, you’ll never have to worry about how you’re going to keep paying for your trip.
