Farm jobs in Cairns
Situated on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is the bustling hub of tropical Far North Queensland. Its waterfront esplanade features its own lagoon swimming pool, flanked by restaurants and bars where you can soak up the Queensland lifestyle. The lush Daintree National Park lies just to the north, together with idyllic tropical beaches, although keep in mind that high humidity (and stinging jellyfish) are experienced during the “wet” season from November to March.
Most farm jobs in Cairns are in the banana industry, with work available picking, tending and planting new trees throughout the year. Many of these jobs aren't in Cairns itself but in the regions surrounding Innisfail and Tully which lie to the south. Tropical cyclones and flooding are not uncommon and can sometimes damage crops, so check in advance that work is available before heading there. Backpacker jobs picking avocados are also available in Kuranda to the northwest of Cairns during February/ March, while mangoes are harvested here in December/ January. Work is also available in the coffee-growing industry throughout the year, together with general farm labouring and cattle station work in Cairns’ rural surrounds.
