Garden To Table Chef On A Beautiful Farm In Tasmania

Mount Gnomon Farm Penguin, Tasmania

2nd Year Visa Eligible

Job Description

We have a full-time position available as a chef starting in October. The job qualifies for regional rural work towards your second year visa in Australia, as it includes elements of farm work. We're looking for the successful applicant to join us in for the busy summer season, ideally for 6 month period. It's a great opportunity if you like freedom and opportunity as you will often work independently with produce from the farm and our kitchen garden. In addition to preparing for weddings and festivals there is the creative opportunity to create your own dishes when we open the restaurant to the public on weekends. You will also have the opportunity to learn some butchery from our experienced farm butcher as well as the art of charcuterie.

Basically we're looking for a responsible, independent, creative and hard working individual to work at our farm for a minimum period of six months, potentially longer. We have a beautiful new barn that has been built for functions and events. We have a full calendar of weddings and festivals lined up.

A bit about us - we're a young international team running a free range pig, sheep and cattle farm in a really beautiful part of Tasmania. The farm is called Mount Gnomon Farm, there are plenty of images on our Facebook page and Instagram accounts, or you can learn more through our website. The farm is really a little community where we combine to run a paddock to plate business. We think it’s a pretty special place and a great opportunity for the right individuals.

The farm is 9km from the cute seaside village of Penguin in Tasmania's north-west, and it's right next to a mountain range that's great for bushwalking and mountain biking. We're just over 1.5 hours away from Cradle Mountain. Technically, if our pigs escaped they could walk all the way to Cradle and only have to cross one road!

We're doing things a bit different to conventional farmers: we keep old-fashioned breeds that are at risk of extinction and we look after the whole process from paddock to plate. We also go to farmers' markets around Tasmania every weekend to sell our sausages and other meat, and we attend food and music festivals where we make our famous pulled pork tacos and smokey beef and bacon burgers.

The chef position will follow in the footsteps of other young, international chefs who have enjoyed the challenge and freedom of working with fresh local ingredients sourced from the farm, garden and other Tasmanian artisan producers. As a chef, you will play a lead role in working with our kitchen gardener, preparing dishes for farmers' markets, food festivals and functions (such as weddings, family gatherings), and be the chef in our pop-up restaurant, which we plan to open on a more regular base this summer. The work will be varied and as a member of the team, you will also get some hands-on farm and kitchen gardening experience.

The position requires you to be a leader and work independently as well as a member of a team. It's a great job for the right person. Our previous chefs have had a great experience at the farm. Some of their dishes and menus can be viewed on our Facebook and Instagram accounts.

The position is full time, accomodation and food could potentially be provided.

Please apply outlining why you feel like you would be suited to the position and joining our farm community along with some information about the relevant experiences. It is essential to include one professional referee and one personal referee and your telephone number so we can follow up.

Description:
Our farm rests again the backdrop of the stunning Dial Range just south of Penguin. Our story starts over 11 years ago where we set out to promote ethical farming and become Tasmania's first free range commercial pig farm. We supported rare breeds selling free range pork products into some of Australia's finest restaurants. The farm and business has now developed and evolved into something much larger than we ever anticipated. In addition to an on farm butchery it has an on farm restaurant and a new barn for functions and events. This combined with beautiful gardens and a 1000 tree cider orchard has made it become both a beautiful event space and place to visit.
The farm has had a focus on not only producing ethical produce but engaging the community in the story behind the produce. This is why the farm regularly has open days and farm tours.
