Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and International Dark Sky Sanctua Arkaroola Village, South Australia

2nd Year Visa Eligible

Job Description

With a geological history reaching back almost 2 billion years, this ancient landscape also has an extraordinary human history. Frequented and featuring in creation stories by indigenous peoples for tens of thousands of years the area was later brought to the attention of the modern world by the late Professor Sir Douglas Mawson.

As South Australia's first designated International Dark Sky Sanctuary, Arkaroola is also alive in the evenings! With 3 state of the art Astronomical Observatories and far from the light of cities, Arkaroola is perfect for those with an interest in the night sky.

Arkaroola offers 3 types of astronomy tours:
• Traditional eye to telescope
• State of the art remote controlled imaging
• Viewing under the stars using binoculars, telescope and automated star chairs

The Role
A rare opportunity is available for an enthusiastic applicant to guide astronomy tours at Arkaroola International Dark Sky Sanctuary. As an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, preserving a dark night sky environment is one of Arkaroola’s key objectives. The Astronomy Tour Guide’s responsibilities include educating visitors of the importance of dark skies by:
• Conducting any of the existing types of astronomy tours offered at Arkaroola.
• Work with management to further develop astronomy offerings, such as tours, other products and merchandise based on research and feedback from visitors
• Contribute to International DarkSky reporting

As Astronomy Guide you are central to ensuring our guests experience the very highest levels of service and safety while on our tours. Tour Guides are an integral part of Arkaroola’s operations. You will work the front desk during the day, talking to guests about astronomy offers, and liaising with the Front Office Manager working through bookings. You will also maintain the cleanliness of the observatories, perform pre and post tour checks and be involved in equipment and software maintenance.

A South Australian drivers licence for medium rigid vehicles and driver accreditation are preferred for this role. For the right candidate we would be willing to assist in obtaining applicable driver’s licence and accreditation.
