For three exciting weeks every January, Sydney is turned on its head in one of the biggest and most entertaining festivals in the country. Take a break from searching for jobs in Sydney. This major arts festival has been running since 1977, and is the perfect encounter for those of you wanting to really experience one of Australia’s biggest cities come to life and show you a bloody good time!
January is the perfect month to host this huge scale event as the weather in Australia at that time is usually nothing short of perfect. So naturally there a lot of outdoor events and shows on offer! Opera in the Domain is one that is popular every year. This is a good one to go to if you’ve never seen opera before and may be a bit afraid of the seriousness of it all. Don’t be afraid. Just do what the locals do, which is take a hot chook, dips and bread, a bottle of wine or two, a picnic rug and some good mates and enjoy a casual, friendly, outdoor concert, that just happens to be a full length classic opera. Its gorgeous!
This night is classed as a local event as it is performed by Opera Australia. Other notable local events are Australian musicians or cabaret artists, dance companies, symphonies and DJ’s. But its important to note that its not all Australian grown, they bring in some absolutely huge names to the Sydney Festival each year to mix up the line up: comedians, headlining singers or entire theatre productions or circus acts and installations.
As well as all this stuff that you can buy tickets to on the website, there is a whole bunch of free stuff too! Hooray for free! Opera and the symphony in the Domain are regulars, then there’s a huge live music concert, also in the Domain. There’ll be installations all over the city to check out, and pop up events like Box Wars, a Ferrython and fairground.
If you do have a little cash, do yourself a favour and buy a ticket to something on at the Spiegeltent, it doesn’t matter what you go to see, just do it, the shows are always awesome and the venue is top notch and one you may not see again.
A good tip is to get your tickets for cheap on the day of the performance at the ticket booth in Martin Place. This is good for the spontaneous theatregoer amongst you as you’re not always sure what will be on offer, and you never know what you’ll end up getting. But you’ll probably love it!
This is an absolutely thrilling way to get to know Sydney, her cheeky creative side and exceptional nightlife.
